Instructor Profile:

David Birk is currently managing director of Black Belt Compliance, LLC. Headquartered in Tempe, Arizona, Black Belt is a consulting firm that assists public companies and other organizations with the design and implementation of programs needed to comply with numerous laws and regulations.

He has been an attorney for 40 years and is a member of the Bar of the State of New York and the In-House Bar of the State of Arizona. In 2008, Mr. Birk was named one of Arizona’s most influential lawyers by Arizona Business Magazine. He has written and spoken on numerous legal topics, particularly on the topic of compliance.

He is certified in change management and as a project management professional. He currently serves as head of the Legal Community of Practice for the Project Management Institute (PMI).

Previously, Mr. Birk served as general counsel of Avnet, Inc. (Fortune # 108). He retired as general counsel from Avnet at the end of 2012, after 32 years of employment and 23 years as general counsel. During his tenure, Avnet grew from $1 billion in revenue to $26 billion and from a solely North America based company to one with a global footprint in more than 75 countries. He led the acquisition of over 100 companies in different regions across the globe. He created an Office of Compliance for Avnet, and sponsored the design and implementation of numerous ethics and compliance programs globally. He served as a speaker and trainer for many of their programs.

Prior to his affiliation with Avnet, Mr. Birk was associated with several law firms in the New York City area. He obtained his undergraduate degree from the University of Florida and his JD from Cornell Law School.
