OSHA Recordkeeping - Work-relatedness


Work-relatedness is presumed for injuries and illnesses resulting from events or exposures occurring in the work environment. The work environment includes the place where employees are working, as well as the equipment and materials they use to accomplish their jobs.


Following are also considered work related:

  • An injury or illness that occurs while an employee is on work-related travel and it is occurred while the employee was engaged in work activities in the interest of the employer
  • Injuries and illnesses that occur while an employee is working at home are work-related if they:
    • occur while the employee is performing work for pay or compensation in the home, and
    • are directly related to the performance of work rather than the general home environment

Exceptions for work relatedness:

  • During the time of injury or illness, if the employee was present there as a member of general public
  • When the injury or illness was resulted during the voluntary participation in a wellness, fitness or recreational activity other than work related
  • If the injury or illness occurred during drinking, eating and preparing food for personal consumption (illness due to food contaminated from workplace contaminants and food supplied from employer must considered as work- related)
  • Injury or illness happened during employees’ personal tasks that are unrelated to their employment, at the establishment after the working hours
  • Injury or illness due to personal grooming or self-medication for a non-work related condition or intentionally self-inflicted
  • Injury or illness caused by a motor vehicle accident that occurs on a company parking lot or company access road when the employee is commuting to or from work
  • The illness is the common cold or flu
  • Mental illness lacking a licensed healthcare professional opinion that stating the illness is work related.

Only the work related injuries or illness should be recorded that results in:

  • Death
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Days away from work
  • Restricted work activity or job transfer
  • Medical treatment beyond first aid
