Topic Background:

In 2011 & 2012, the fifth most frequently cited OSHA standard was 1910.147, hazardous energy control (Lockout/Tagout). This 1910.147 standard establishes minimum requirements to control hazardous energy in the workplace. Workers performing service and maintenance of equipment and machinery are highly exposed to unexpected energization due to the startup of the equipment or release of the stored energy in the machinery. Employers must establish an energy control program in order to prevent unexpected energization in the workplace during service and maintenance operations.
