According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), noise-induced hearing loss is one of the most common occupational diseases, and is the second-most self-reported occupational illness or injury.

• Approximately one in five Americans are deal with some type of hearing loss.
• It is due to the natural process of aging.
• Hearing loss can also result from exposure to loud noises over time.

Many workers are often exposed to noises loud enough to cause permanent hearing loss. It can happen slowly over time, so it may not even be noticeable.

The time to be concerned about hearing loss is before it starts. Hearing loss is permanent. The good news is that hearing loss is preventable with the right protection.

Joe Keenan is a highly experienced Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) and human resources professional and management consultant with over 21 years of experience. He received his Six Sigma/Lean Manufacturing Green Belt in 2005, MBA with a human resource management concentration in 2007 and Certified Safety Professional (CSP) in 2011. He currently serves as President of the Mississippi Chapter of the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE).
