FDA Issues Draft Regulatory Documents on Nutrition Facts Label and Serving Size
The U.S. FDA has recently released two draft guidance documents on Nutrition Facts Labeling and Serving Sizes to aid industry comply with the final rules issued by Agency in May 2016. The Final Nutrition Fact Label rule released in May 2016 marked the first comprehensive revamp of the label in 20 years.
The first draft guidance document address the questions related to the following topics:
- Compliance dates
- Labeling of added sugars
- Declaration of quantitative amounts of vitamins and minerals
- Label format i.e. thickness of lines and space between lines
The second draft guidance document offers examples of food products that fit into the categories included in the tables of Reference Amounts Customarily Consumed (RACCs) per Eating Occasion that are well-known in FDA’s serving size guidelines.
FDA is presently accepting comments on these two draft guidance documents. Comments submitted by March 6, 2017 will be considered in the development of the final versions of each guidance document.
Compliance Dates
The compliance date for the manufacturers with over $10 million in annual sales have until July 26, 2018 to implement the new labeling requirements while those with less than $10 million in annual sales have time till July 16, 2019.
