Topic Background:

The Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (C-TPAT): This voluntary incentive-based program offered by Customs has become the cornerstone of their anti-terrorism initiatives. While the vast majority of the members today are U.S. importers and service providers; U.S. exporters may also benefit through bilateral Mutual Recognition Agreements. More than 10,000 companies have joined C-TPAT since it was established in 2002. All Validated members receive benefits such as:

  • Lower exam rates;
  • Front of line privileges in the event of an exam or terrorist incident;
  • ‘Member Only’ Conferences and Training hosted by Customs;
  • C-TPAT is a prerequisite for other incentive-based programs offered by Customs such as the ISA (Importer Self-Assessment) program.

U.S. Customs has a stated mission of quadrupling the C-TPAT program by 2014; in order to increase membership it is anticipated that the benefits of participation will continue to be enhanced.
