Toxic and Hazardous Substances Standards (29CFR1910) - Summary of Requirements

Title 29 of the Electronic Code of Federal Regulations is concerned with labor. Subtitle B deals with regulations relating to labor.
Chapter XVII under Title 29 covers Occupational Safety and Health Administration, Department of Labor. Part 1910 under the said chapter deals with Occupational Safety and Health Standards. Subpart H specifically deals with hazardous materials. Subpart H covers different hazardous materials and different activities, as the following Table reveals:

§ 1910.101 Compressed gases (general requirements)
This sub-part lays down standards in respect of:
- Inspection of compressed gas cylinders
- Compressed gases
- Safety relief devices for compressed gas containers
Inspection of compressed gas cylinders. Each employer should determine that compressed gas cylinders under his control are in a safe condition to the extent that this can be determined by visual inspection. Visual and other inspections should be conducted as prescribed in the Hazardous Materials Regulations of the Department of Transportation (49 CFR parts 171–179 and 14 CFR part 103).
(b) Compressed gases. The in-plant handling, storage, and utilization of all compressed gases in cylinders, portable tanks, rail tankcars, or motor vehicle cargo tanks should be in accordance with Compressed Gas Association Pamphlet P–1–1965, which is incorporated by reference as specified in §1910.6.
(c) Safety relief devices for compressed gas containers. Compressed gas cylinders, portable tanks, and cargo tanks should have pressure relief devices installed and maintained in accordance with Compressed Gas Association Pamphlets S–1.1–1963 and 1965 addenda and S–1.2–1963, which is incorporated by reference as specified in §1910.6.
§ 1910.102 Acetylene
This sub-part lays down standards in respect of:
- Cylinders
- Piped systems
- Generators and filling cylinders
§ 1910.103 Hydrogen
This section lays down standards in respect of:Installation of Gaseous Hydrogen Systems
- Installation of Liquefied Hydrogen Systems
- Piping, tubing and fittings
- Equipment assembly
- Marking
- Testing
§ 1910.104 Oxygen
This section applies to the installation of bulk oxygen systems on industrial and institutional consumer premises. This sub-part lays down standards in respect of location of bulk oxygen storage systems
§ 1910.105 Nitrous oxide
This section lays down standards for the piped systems for the in-plant transfer and distribution of nitrous oxide. They should be designed, installed, maintained, and operated in accordance with Compressed Gas Association Pamphlet G–8.1–1964, which is incorporated by reference as specified in §1910.6.
§ 1910.106 Flammable and combustible liquids
This section lays down standards for flammable and combustible liquids of various viscosities, design and construction of tanks, atmospheric tanks, low pressure tanks, pressure vessels, outside aboveground tanks, etc.
§ 1910.107 Spray finishing using flammable and combustible materials
This section lays down standards to be adhered to while giving spray finishing using flammable and combustible materials.
§ 1910.109 Explosives and blasting agents
This section lays down the standards to be adhered to while using explosives and blasting agents.
§ 1910.110 Storage and handling of liquefied petroleum gases
This section lays down the standards to be adhered to during storage and handling of liquefied petroleum gases.
§ 1910.111 Storage and handling of anhydrous ammonia
This section lays down the standards to be adhered to during storage and handling of anhydrous ammonia.
§ 1910.119 Process safety management of highly hazardous chemicals
This section lays down the standards to be adhered to during process safety management of highly hazardous chemicals.
§ 1910.120 Hazardous waste operations and emergency response
This section lays down the standards to be adhered to during hazardous waste operations and emergency response.
§ 1910.124 General requirements for dipping and coating operations.
This section lays down the general requirements for dipping and coating operations.
§ 1910.125 Additional requirements for dipping and coating operations that use flammable or combustible liquids.
