The California Family Rights Act (CFRA) was established to ensure that employees who have worked for at least a period of 1250 hours were able to take leave for any of the following reasons:
- The birth or adoption of a child
- Employee’s own serious health conditions
- To care for the serious health conditions of employee’s parent, spouse or child (under 18 years or an adult dependent)
The Act requires an employer with 50 or more employees in the state of California to allow the eligible employee to take 12 weeks of leave. The 12 work weeks of leave don’t need to be taken in one continuous period of time – the Act stipulates certain requirements for calculation for leave as well as duration and notification. The CFRA provides multiple benefits for both eligible employees and employers.
